first time since that stage behind collapsed on saturday. as the casualty count climbed, one question prevails, could the tragedy have been prevented? >> oh, my god! oh, my god! are you okay? >> reporter: the terror in that moment when the deadly gust tore down the giant stage, shows vividly how it caught the concertgoers off guard. they were in the third row. >> when the stage hit her and i'm seeing the other people that aren't getting out of the way, it's something that will stick with you forever. >> the opening act had just finished. the crowd waiting for the sugarland, the country headliner. they spoken five times to national weather forecasters at

the airport. they predicted it would hit the fair between 9:00 and 9:30. at 8:39 forecasters issued a severe thunderstorm warning. at 8:45 announcer tells the crowd the storm is coming. but no evacuations. a cold blast blew in ahead of the storm. at 8:49 winds over 60 miles per hour ripped into the riggings. tons of scaffolding came tumbling down. >> the midway there were no damages to structures there. >> in the aftermath, dozens injured and five dead, including a newly hired teacher, an activist and a father of two. >> they were laying on the ground. little girls being carried out because they were crushed from being in the front row. >> reporter: she suffered

bruised ribs. >> it was like the worst scary movie you have ever, ever been to and i can't even imagine, the front row of the sugar pit, there were so many little children. >> reporter: moving the injured on makeshift stretchers. indiana's governor choked up as he praised those who helped. >> character that we associate with our state, people don't have to be paid to do it. >> reporter: the governor's still placing all the blame on the freeshgish wind gust. they launched an investigation into how well that stage was built. >> all right, chris, thank you. we'll talk to the man you just talked about in your piece. more of that dramatic cell phone video, he was preparing to

right in front of my wife. she was arm distance from touching the stage herself. >> you said that you wanted to make sure your wife was okay and then once you were aware that she was, you sprung into action like so many others, people were coming forward and saying, they were doctors and nurses and just helping any way they good. >> yes, it was amazing after i climbed back in there, people yelling, i'm a doctor, an emt. >> we heard the governor just praising, you were the first responders, you didn't hesitate to help those who didn't even know, where did it come? >> i don't know, it was more like an instinct. there was no thinking involved. i threw my arms at my wife's back. shoved her.

we were 5, 10 feet for the front of the stage that just fell and i just turned around. i knew that she was safe. >> david, before we went on the air, you said that it's now really sinking in. >> there was a lady, young lady, same age as me actually, her partner, she passed away and we were standing in front of her -- right behind her, my fault, when we were in line to get into the concert and realized that we were so close to them, if we went left or right, we could have been right there. >> we're thinking of those who lost their lives and you too who jumped into help. >> thank you. now to the race for the white house. which has a new look after the most action-packed weekend.

michelle balk nan big winner of the straw poll in iowa. tim pawlenty the loser, dropped on "this week." jake tapper has covered it from iowa, he's moved to minnesota. jake, the president waking up to his worst poll numbers yet. >> reporter: that's right. greetings from cannon falls, minnesota, where president obama will begin his bus tour of the midwest focusing on the economy. as you point out, george, he has a tough road ahead of him. dipping under 40% for the first time for his presidency, his ratings. does it say anything about president obama's vulnerability that republicans are treating another governor of texas as a

in a newly released statement, his lawyers said that his client has been cooperating. up until a few days before they left for the trip, his client didn't know about the country. investigators are focusing intensely on what they call his troubles with women. two women have been granted restraining orders against him. one ex-girlfriend alleges this violent assault. we argued about his past sexual lifestyle as a swinger. he started to choke me with both hands. he then shoved his fingers down my throat. i was struggling and gagging. >> he started telling me that he would protect her. it's not going to be another natalee holloway. >> reporter: he also offered to take her to the producer and her

going to go about putting together piece by piece what they have without a body, it seems, so far. without a lot of specific hard evidence. but, brad was saying that they could put a circumstantial case together based on what they have. >> if you don't have quote, unquote a crime scene, in other words, if she's dead, she died of some means that doesn't leave any evidence. he put her in the water and this will end up being a circumstantial case. >> knowing what you know, brad, and what other women have said, put together a profile of this man. >> okay, typically stalkers and domestic abusers are people who have extremely well self-esteem. what happens is, once he brings you into his world and once you obey him, everything goes fine.
